I lost myself too after becoming a mother. 

Before becoming “their mom,” I was organized, motivated and put-together.

And then motherhood came and turned my world upside down.

What had once been “mild anxiety” became a full-blown postpartum mood disorder and before long, I had no idea who I was.

My mind raced uncontrollably with thoughts that were not my own. I couldn’t sleep. I was irritable and snapped at anyone who looked at me, even my newborn babies. I became a shell of my former self.

Even though I was a doctor who specializes in women’s mental health, it took me a while to realize what was going on.

   When I finally reached out and got the help I needed, I learned quickly that creating a lifelong plan to manage my anxiety was going to be key to becoming the mom my girls deserved, and actually enjoying my experience as a mother.

I began taking a systematic and proactive approach to tracking, monitoring and managing my anxiety on a daily basis – rather than just waiting for it to get bad and then panicking and reacting to it.

Now, I offer this system to other moms in Journey To Calm. By using the strategies in this course, I have been able to get my anxiety under control, move on to build an online business alongside being a family doctor and
no longer am defined or controlled by my anxiety.

Through working with Carly, I realized that I had been managing my anxiety with smoking for 35 years. Once I quit, my anxiety was running my life and I didn’t know where to turn or what to do. I have shared much of what I have learned from Carly in this course with my daughters in hopes to help them change their passive patterns as well.

I cannot change my past but I can change their future.

The most useful part of the course was the importance of checking in with myself, leaning in to hear what my anxiety is saying rather than trying to wish the “purple elephant” away.

This is a video-based online course that is broken down into 5 modules. The modules each include 1-4 short videos (5-20 minutes in length) in which the concepts in that lesson will be taught.

As a doctor, I’m often asked if my coaching or associated online services are covered by any private insurance plans. Unfortunately, although extremely effective, coaching is a NEW field and to my knowledge is not yet an insured service through most private health care benefit plans. Online courses, while potent vehicles for true learning and change, also typically fall out of the standard policies for health insurance provided by employers. However, I do encourage everyone to contact their specific insurance provider to inquire whether coaching might qualify for flex or extended health spending accounts.

I believe medications for mood disorder can be incredibly effective as a part of a treatment plan. That being said, treatment is incredibly individualized and medications are not right for everyone. Whether you are against medications, considering them or taking them currently, this course will be helpful for you.

Of note, despite my training, I do not provide medical advice or medication management within the context of coaching. This course does not explicitly cover or advise regarding medication management for mood disorder. I strongly encourage finding a medical provider who you can develop a strong relationship with to provide this service.
